Sometimes it really just all comes down to the creative process. And for us, that creative process takes place in our at-home studio!
We operate Lauren Baker Print & Design as a part-time business...a side-hustle...a night owl’s dream... with our business running alongside working our full-time job. Having our studio at home means we can work really strange hours getting a project done and not have to worry about some of the finer details – like having enough snacks to eat or wearing clothes other than our PJs at 11pm.
Over the years, the space I’ve created in has naturally changed as I've moved from place to place. From carrying around a lot of my art supplies with me during our undergrad, to sharing a desk/dining room table with my guy, to having a whole spare bedroom to myself, and now a whole spare bedroom with a closet. The older I get the more hilarious I find the things I get excited about too – but here we are, being very happy about a small bedroom closet.
Speaking of closets, we recently painted ours a bright pink/peach colour and are so happy with how it turned out! Having many POPS of colour in our studio helps to maintain a cheerful vibe, so we couldn't go wrong with getting a bright yellow office chair as well - something we've wanted to add to our studio for a while but could never find exactly what we had in mind!
As a creative person and visual learner, one might assume that our book library is mostly "picture books". However, over the years we've collected many text and visual based books ranging from graphic design, photography, drawing, art history, event planning, children's education, and so many more that we frequently reference while working on a project.
Some of our favourite books on our shelf include:
Our little (fur) Studio Assistant, Ollie, has his "office" right on top of one of our bookshelves which is perfect for keeping his eye on all of our Shop orders going out. Our shipping station for our Shop orders is organized between one of our bookshelves and a cabinet where we store all of the cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, air bubble mailers, packing tape, fun stickers and more that we need.
In our studio we have three different kinds of "walls": 1) for our framed portfolio favourites, 2) for pieces we've found over time that inspire us such as pages from magazines, hotel coasters, and parts of wrapping paper paired with bits and pieces of our own design work such as our latest patterns, 1-off designs, and design freebies we offer our newsletter pals, and 3) a Wedding Collection mockup board where we layout all of the collection's suite pieces and colour swatches to help bring everything together.
There you have it - a peek into our design studio. If you're reading this far, thank-you!
