5 Types of Illustration & How to Use Them

Updated: Jan 5, 2022

Illustrations. You’ve seen them in magazines, books, logos, posters, video games, films, and animation. The process of illustrating something is meant to add a touch of decoration to written text, tell a story, and/or visually explain a concept or process.

Lauren Baker Print & Design uses illustration in many aspects of our business ranging from wedding invitations, promotional posters, character portraits, surface patterns, and more

Illustration can be grouped into five categories:

  • Character

  • Pattern

  • Spot/Object

  • Icon

  • Logo

Character illustration is a representation of a being (i.e. a person or animal – real or fictitious) that accounts for both their appearance and their personality. Character illustration is used to portray a particular individual. We apply character illustrations to save the dates, wedding invitations, art prints, greeting cards, mugs, and more. Below are a few examples of character illustrations our clients have commissioned.

Pattern illustration is repeating an arrangement of shapes, forms, lines, and colours to create an overall design or impression. We apply pattern designs to wedding stationery, wrapping paper, digital wallpapers, coasters, paper party supplies, and more. Below are a few examples of pattern design from our portfolio.

Spot/Object illustration is an illustration that is able to stand on its own and is meant to highlight a specific aspect of a project, website, printed material, etc. We apply spot/object illustrations to event programs, promotional posters, and greeting cards. Below are a few examples of spot/object illustration from our portfolio.

Icon illustration is similar to spot/object illustration but icon illustration is much smaller in size and is used on website menus, product packaging, etc. While icon and spot/object illustrations are similar, we tend to create spot/object illustrations for our client projects.

Logo illustration is a recognizable design for a business or organization that includes a name, symbol, and/or trademark. Logos are put on all components of a company’s branding – from letterhead to packaging to the product itself. Logo illustration can be very simple or quite detailed and decorative – the level of detail depends on the nature of a brand’s personality. We apply logo illustration throughout our own business branding to the products in our online Shop, as well as, to wedding stationery by creating special wedding logos for our clients to apply to various aspects of their special day beyond their wedding stationery. Below are a few examples of logo illustration from our wedding stationery portfolio.
